Preparation

We recommend that you prepare for the SDT. Students looking for review and practice material might want to look for ONE of these mathematics books in the Langara College Library. Select the course that you would like to take, and then choose one of the books in that section. If you do not have a Langara College library card, then you can go to a public library and select a book with a similar title. Alternatively, you can do your review work at the Langara Library. We do not have practice tests for the SDT. We do not have a course that prepares you to take the SDT.

Instructions & Registration

It is necessary to register for the SDT. There is a fee of $45.00 and you will be expected to have your receipt available in order to enter the testing room. Note that registration will be closed when the class is full or three days before the test date (for online sittings). Also, if SDT fee is not paid when the registration is closed, you will be dropped out from the class list automatically. Before you register, please read about the fee payment below first.

  • Click on "Login" at the top of the page.
  • Login with your Langara ID and PIN
  • Click on "Students Main Menu"
  • Click on "Continuing Studies"
  • Click on "Register"
  • Select a Semester
  • Click on "LET/Diagnostic Tests Search"
  • Follow the instructions at the top of each page to complete your registration.

You may register in person or by phone at Langara's Continuing Studies Office.

Payment: money order (payable to Langara College), debit card, Visa or MasterCard. Note: For online registration, you can pay your fee with Visa or MasterCard. We are no longer accepting cash payments as of October 1, 2021.

Note that if you have accidently paid for the test by deducting the money from your deposit account, you MUST contact Student Accounts at a.receivables@langara.ca to request the money to be transferred from Regular Studies term to Continuing Studies term for the money to be applied toward the test. This process may take 2-3 business days to complete. Once the money is transferred, the student will need to call the Continuing Studies office to register for the test. You cannot register prior to the money being transferred because you will be dropped.  Note that this is not an option you should have chosen when registering for the test.

Hours of registration of the Langara Continuing Studies Office:

9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday*
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday*

*closed on holidays and weekends.

When you come to the test, please bring:

  • photo ID
  • receipt showing that you have paid for the MDT
  • your Langara Identification Number
  • all transcripts showing your previous mathematics experience (high school and any post-secondary courses) - optional

CALCULATORS

  • Calculators are permitted for the Statistics Test, but are restricted to scientific or business models only. Those with graphing or text-retrieval capabilities are not permitted.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: SDT will now be ON CAMPUS/IN PERSON starting Fall 2023 semester.

This test is for students wishing to enrol in STAT 1124 or PSYC 2321 or KINS 2206 who do not have a recent C grade in Math 11 (or equivalent). As well, students wishing to enroll in STAT 1123 may wish to take this test to assess their readiness for STAT 1123. Students wishing to enroll in STAT 1181 should not write this test, but must have a calculus prerequisite (or corequisite).

Students have 45 minutes to write the Statistics Test.

Students are permitted to use a scientific or business calculator.

Sample Questions from the Statistics Test

  1. Convert to percentage: 7/16
  2. What is 85% of 75?
  3. If a=3, b=6, and c=-2, calculate ( a - bc ) / ( a2 + b2 + c2 )
  4. What is the square root of 72?
  5. What is the square of 4.8?
  6. For the line Y = -2X + 10, give the value of the slope and the intercept.
  7. What is the value of 10*4? (note that the "*" could also be replaced by a dot)
