A key objective of RECR 2260 is for students to gain a greater understanding for the value of the arts in the field of community recreation. Recreation professionals acknowledge an increased demand for community-based creative projects as we see how they are being used by organizations and groups in areas such as youth, health and community development because they are able to reach people and have meaningful impact on their lives.  It is this understanding that guides the learning in this course.

The course acknowledges that the breadth and depth of community based art projects extend far beyond what could be outlined … there are so many different approaches to this kind of arts programming these projects develop through a variety of different components including:  the artist you find yourself working with, the budget, the make-up of participating community members, the art medium being utilized- dance, visual arts, music?   The common ground, though, is a shared belief in the creativity of all people and their inherent right to express what is important to them in a manner that is relevant, challenging and fun.

Students learn first-hand about the pleasure, challenge and deep satisfaction that come with engaging ones’ imagination and creativity through hands on creative encounter. The images below provide a glimpse into our exploration.
