This delightful poster by Lori Roberts which claims to illustrate the “Guide to Happiness” came across my screen the other day and I couldn’t help but be struck by the ties I saw in it to the recreation field, and in wonderful - but not typical - ways.
In our recreation centres we gather, explore, and try new things on a daily basis. We build things, we honour traditions, we stretch our bodies and minds. We try new things, say yes to adventures big and small, and nourish each other with food and celebrations. We listen to each other. Ultimately, we bring people in our communities together, to connect and share and laugh and learn – whether it be in a pottery class, at a community arts event, or at a drop-in basketball game - so that they know that they are not in this world alone. If this isn’t the path to happiness itself, I don’t know what is!
How many of these things do you do on a daily, weekly or monthly basis? How can you add more of these simple actions to your life, and to the lives of those in your communities? Something to ponder on this warm summery day…
