Seminar title: What is Lost When the Flower has Dried?

Drying is an important process in cannabis production, principally for maintaining shelf life but also affecting texture, aroma, and the potency per mass sold. Moisture content for agricultural products is typically determined as the weight loss on drying, but cannabis breeding has produced flowers with an incredibly high content of fragile phytochemicals, so the drying has to be done carefully. Using chromatography we have measured the change in composition for different drying conditions. We have also developed a means to quantify the stickiness of cannabis samples before and after drying, and relating it to the composition. Both stickiness and THC content seem to indicate that some cultivars are more fragile than others.

This project is a partnership with Pure Sunfarms and funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the BC Knowledge Development Fund. The presentation will be followed with a Q&A and refreshments.

About the Seminar Series

The ARC seminar series is a new initiative by Dr. Ido Hatam who has been working on the Applied Science for the Canadian Cannabis Industry (ASCCI) research project.

This seminar series will showcase the exciting research projects that our faculty members are doing. This event will spark collaboration, exchange of ideas, and knowledge sharing among our academic community. It promises more than just research insights – it's a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow faculty members and engage in stimulating discussions. Get ready for a lively Q&A session with refreshments.
