To address and prevent sexual violence, Langara has undertaken several initiatives in addition to the adoption of our Sexual Violence and Misconduct policy. Below is a list of some of to the initiatives we have completed or are developing:

  • Sexual Respect Ambassador Employee Program: The Sexual Respect Ambassador program is a college-wide program, supported by the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, the Human Resources Department and the Sexual Violence Prevention Committee. The program has support and endorsement from the Vice President, People Services and the Dean, Student Services. This team of staff and faculty play a leading role to support culture change at Langara College and foster an understanding of the importance of sexual violence and misconduct prevention. Ambassadors act as “goto” resources within their departments. Ambassadors have received training in Langara Policy and the Law; Sexual Harassment from a Human Rights Perspective; Responding to Disclosures; Understanding Consent; Making Referrals, and Bystander Intervention.
  • Sexual Respect Ambassador Student Program: Like the employee program, the Sexual Respect Ambassador Student Program provided training to interested students on the Langara Sexual Violence Policy, Responding to Disclosures, and Bystander Intervention. Student Ambassadors participate in events, promote healthy relationships, and act as a resource for other students.
  • Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Tutorials: Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Program tutorials are designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of themes associated with sexual harassment and its prevention. It identifies the student support services at Langara College to ensure that survivors receive assistance and accommodation in the case of sexual misconduct.   • Print, digital display boards, social media campaign designed to heighten awareness of sexual violence and consent.

  • New student orientation, Parent orientation, New employee orientation, and in-class presentations for students to raise awareness.

  • Assisting Student Survivors of Sexualized Violence employee resource folder (Gold medal winner in National Council for Marketing & Public Relations Medallion Awards) to provide information to employees on how to help students.

  • Happy Valentine’s Day card campaign (Bronze medal winner in National Council for Marketing & Public Relations Medallion Awards) to increase understanding of consent.

  • Displays and information tables at the Annual Pink Shirt Day events and the Campus Wellness Fair.

  • Design Foundation Program and Marketing Management Program student course work projects and awards. Five classes have participated so far, involving over 100 students.

  • West Coast Leaf – “Yes Means Yes” training for students and employees.

  • International Student Focus Groups to identify unique opportunities for awareness promotion and training for our international students.

  • Animated informational video used for training and web purposes.

  • Pop-up Information Kiosks to bring awareness across the campus in informal settings.
