Where exactly is the mind? For most of us the answer seems obvious and unassailable: it’s in the head…or is it? Over the past two decades or so, some philosophers of mind, including Dan Dennett, Andy Clark, and David Chalmers, have argued that this isn’t always the case. This session explores our cognitive dependence on and interaction with information technology -- from the humble address book to the latest smartphones – and the proposition that our mind can be said to extend beyond the boundaries of the brain into our technological devices.

Martin Godwyn hails from London, England, but managed to escape (after a couple of degrees in philosophy from Southampton and then Cambridge) to UBC to do a PhD in the philosophy of mind. He has taught philosophy at a number of institutions in the lower mainland, and presently teaches at Capilano University. Last year he climbed the Matterhorn.

This event takes place at Langara College in the Employee Lounge (100 West 49th Avenue, Vancouver BC).
