Ever wonder how products move from manufacturing to usage? The global supply chain is a complex system of warehouses, trucks, cargo ships, trains, and airplanes working in sync to move goods worldwide.
At Langara College, students in the Post-Degree Diploma in Supply Chain and Logistics gain the knowledge and hands-on experience to navigate this fast-paced industry. A key component of the program is the workplace practicum program, where students apply classroom learning in real-world settings, build professional connections, and gain confidence to launch their careers. One of the program’s standout practicum partners is MTU Maintenance Canada, a global leader in aircraft engine services.
We spoke with Grace Wang, an Asset Manager at MTU Maintenance who has mentored multiple Langara students, and Erwin Garing, a program alumnus who completed his practicum with MTU before securing a leadership role in supply chain management.
Employer Perspective: Grace Wang, MTU Maintenance Canada
MTU Maintenance Canada has welcomed Langara students for several years, thanks in part to Grace Wang’s commitment to mentorship. She is aware of the important role the practicum program can play for young people joining a tumultuous workforce. Having relocated from China to Germany and then to Canada, Grace understands the challenges many students face, especially those new to the country.
“I know this challenge very well,” Wang explains. “Most of these students have moved to Canada to start a new life, earn a degree, and build a career. I see myself in their journey. I'm truly passionate about helping open doors for them, particularly within the aviation industry supply chain. MTU Canada provides an excellent platform, offering valuable opportunities for the next step in their career."
The weekly and daily schedules will be negotiated between the host employer and students, with consideration of the hosts’ respective job positions and the availability of the students. However, students must be available on a weekly schedule for up to 20 hours at the practicum facility since they are still full-time students in the program.
Practicum students at MTU Maintenance are not just bystanders in the operation. They take on meaningful projects that contribute to the company’s success. Many go on to secure full-time jobs in the industry, demonstrating the value of Langara’s hands-on learning approach. Often, the students are hired directly by the same organization as their practicum placement.
Student Success: Erwin Garing, Project Leader at Fraser Health
For students, the practicum experience is a game-changer. Erwin Garing is one such success story. After completing his practicum at MTU Maintenance, he transitioned seamlessly into a Project Leader role at Fraser Health.
“In class, you’re working on the ideal situation. In real life, there are competing priorities. It’s not a perfect line on a spreadsheet. This program showed me a combination of the theoretical and practical.”
He credits the mentorship he received from Grace Wang for helping him bridge the gap between academia and the professional world. “Grace always told me, ‘Don’t be afraid to ask questions.’ That advice stuck with me, and I apply it in my current role. Being open, curious, and willing to learn is key.”
As global supply chains evolve, the demand for skilled professionals continues to grow, making now the perfect time to enter the field. With MTU Maintenance Canada, among other companies continuing to partner with Langara College, more students will have the chance to gain firsthand experience in the supply chain sector. The practicum program will continue to be a win-win for both employers and students.
