Burnaby Art Gallery's installation of Travel Stories from the Streetscene Group.
Print-based artist, Julie McIntyre studied at the Banff Centre, Alberta, in 1986 and received her BFA from Queen’s University with a major in printmaking in 1987. She has had solo shows in over 22 public galleries in Canada and participated in well over 40 juried exhibitions, including 24 international credits to date. Her “Stories” series all celebrate commonplace experiences while mining highly personal narratives to connect universal experiences. For instance, following the birth of her daughter, Bedtimes Stories (2002-2007), looked at motherhood through the lens of traditional children’s literature, while Road Stories (1993 -1997), inspired by years as a travelling salesperson, examined how the car has profoundly changed our perception of landscape. Travel Stories was inspired by a box of photographs taken by her grandmother during her world travels in the 1960s and ‘70s. The series searches for the familiar in foreign territory and uncovers a lot of baggage about womanhood in the process. With Ghost Stories, Julie used local museum houses to represent Victorian virtues and colonial prejudices that continue to haunt us.
