Single-mom and future journalist: how Langara’s Holiday Bursary helps promising young students reach their potential
We know the holiday season can bring financial challenges for many promising young students. That’s why, for over 25 years, Langara has supported the Holiday Bursary Program, helping students cover the extra costs that arise this time of year. On top of generous community contributions, Langara matches every donation, doubling the impact of our generous donors.
We recently caught up with Annabel Bessem, a journalism student and a recipient of last years’ Holiday Bursary, who shared how the bursary helped her during the holidays.
“As a single mom of two young boys, the cost of living is a big burden, especially around the holidays,” Annabel says. “I want my kids to have a good holiday experience, and the bursary really helps with things like gifts and groceries. My kids are at an age where they’re constantly growing and often need new clothes, so a little extra is a huge help.”
With two kids, a busy, deadline-driven program, and a two-hour daily commute, Annabel has little time for a part-time job. That’s why she wants donors to know how important their contributions can be.
“Without this bursary and other scholarships I’ve received, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ve been on the Dean’s Honour Roll and I’ve even been headhunted by a major broadcaster, setting me up for the future when the program ends.” – Annabel Bessem, Journalist student
With the holidays approaching, Annabel has a message for those thinking about donating: “Your donation could make all the difference for someone. Your support is changing lives.”
