The student is selected on the basis of a combination of marks, writing skills, love of literature, and general enthusiasm for the study of English. Established in honour of Tom Meikle, an instructor in the English Department at Langara from the establishment of Vancouver City College in 1965 until his retirement. Hi was moral and intellectual leader in the department, championing the then new concept of departments electing their chairs rather than having them appointed by administration. Known for his great teaching skills and empathy with students, particularly students returning to college later in life, and for his great love of literature. Tom is still an inspiration to members of the Department and to generations of students.
