The Langara Consulting Club held a business competition on Saturday, September 14, 2024. This event was created, developed, and executed by the Langara Consulting Club.  The LSM asked the group if they had time in their busy class and study schedule to answer some questions regarding their new event planning and management experience.

Can you name a moment where there was an ‘a-ha’ for the planning team?
Initially, the event was planned to have the competition at the end of the summer semester. However, due to student schedules and venue availability, we had to rethink the timing. We chose to do workshops in the summer, with the competition taking place early in the fall semester. This way, it would allow for students to have time to focus on their course work and final exams. Also, by having it early in the fall semester, it allows us benefit from Clubs Day for competitors. Then, we can use the event results when we do class pitches at the end of the month.

Do you recommend anything for future competitors?
#1: Don’t underestimate the time needed to practice reviewing and reciting your presentation. The biggest problem students faced was time management. It's tricky to say everything you want in a short timeframe. Competitors must dedicate a reasonable amount of time to practice conciseness and know when to speed things up.

#2:  Be personable and confident. Don't be afraid to walk up to the panel, shake their hands, and tell them how excited you are to help them with the company's. When presenting ideas and solutions, speak loudly and proudly with a smile. Be excited to tell them about the best thing they'll ever hear for their company. The energy that you embody yourself is the energy you manifest in others.

What did your team learn from the event?
We learned about how to run events of this magnitude. There are many complexities involved: developing the event schedule, choosing the business case, and conducting the actual event. After this experience, we are happy with the results, but we strive to continuously improve our case competitions and events.

Do you recommend anything for future competitors?
Don't be afraid of trying new things and making mistakes. The trick to getting better at case analysis and presentation delivery is repetition.  Try as many cases as possible. This pushes your horizons and creativity to new limits. Our judges are not just judges - they're here to support you and give you feedback on how to improve for next time.
