Kelowna, BC -  The Langara School of Management (LSM) sponsored junior and senior teams to the Western Canadian Business Competition (WCBC) from March 8th to 11th, 2019.  A total of nine teams competed at the Okanagan College campus including the Langara School of Management, McMaster University, Okanagan College, Selkirk College, College of the Rockies, and the College of New Caledonia.

Business competitions provide a platform for students to test and prove their business acumen. Each team is composed of four students making decisions in the business facets of Marketing, Operations, Human Resources, and Finance. These students were presented with a detailed business simulation that requires them to “operate” the business for eight years, producing two different products in four regions across the planet. Over one weekend, the teams produced an initial comprehensive business plan; evaluated the situation and submitted decisions for each of the eight years of the simulation; and gave two presentations on interim progress to a panel of industry experts representing the company’s “Board of Directors.”   Students are judged on their ability analyze the business, and provide strategic advice, the proficiency and depth of the business plan, their performance in the simulation across the eight-year period, and the quality of their presentations including responding to questions from the Board.

The senior team consisted of Christine Hoang (CEO / VP Finance), Julia Tattrie (VP Marketing), Natasha Rennie (VP Human Resources), and Arjun Sumra (VP Operations).

The junior team consisted of Jerry Chieng (CEO / VP Human Resources), Heliya Zarei (VP Finance), Laura Duong (VP Marketing) and Can Atay (VP Operations)

Coaches were Bernie Maroney and Kabir Dhillon.

LSM’s teams had a great time and very successful event. Following are the results for the LSM students:

  • Junior Division, First Place Team Overall
  • Junior Division, Second Place Individual presenter (Laura Duong)
  • Senior Division, Second Place Team Overall
  • Senior Division, Second Place Business Plan

Congratulations are extended to all of the WCBC competitors.
