Are you creative and love charts? Do you find that you tend to take difficult information and enjoy making it understandable to others? Or maybe you enjoy learning about why people buy and choose the products they do? Do you see trends of things in media before others?
Marketing people do that.
The world of marketing includes variety, creativity, and tons of opportunity. If you are someone that likes flexibility, challenges, works well under pressure, and understands the importance of celebrating wins, then this may be a career path that interests you.
Marketing is not just about sales, but it is also all about sales. It actually makes sense, you’ll see why in a moment.
Here is your first assignment (I know, we get you started before you even pay for course!). The next time you go to a coffee shop to pick up a drink complete the following five steps. It’s super easy and fun too!
- Stand back before you go in – take a look at the outside, what do you notice?
- Go inside, look around, what do you notice?
- Go to the register to order (nope, don’t use your app right now), what do you see as you near the register?
- Pick up the order, what do you notice?
- Now, go into your app – what does it look like? What do you notice first?
Notice that we used the word ‘notice’ instead of ‘see?’ Yes, it's repetitive, but there is a reason why.
Now, ask yourself why did you go to that location? That franchise or independent shop? Why did you choose that particular drink? What part of the process do you think a marketing person participated in?
If you said all of them, you’re correct. Marketing isn’t just about putting ads onto websites, it’s about brand strategy, how the target audience perceives you (the customer), and how to get people like yourself – through the door and buying a product, the drink you're probably holding in your hand right now.
What happens behind the scenes?
Tons! Every drink, food, and item sale is reviewed by location, date, time, etc. to determine what is and isn’t selling and how to make things better than before.
- The creative marketer may determine what things look like and even feel like to encourage you to enjoy the experience and want to return. They are all about the BRAND experience.
- The analytical marketer figures out what is working and isn’t, then the managers/owners/etc. look at everything and determine how to move forward with products, posters, promotions, events, etc. They are all about getting you in the door and coming back time and again.
There is a lot more to it, but that gives you a small idea of what marketing can involve for just one location.
That’s a lot of stuff, how do I get there?
It seems like a lot, and it is, but that’s why taking our Diploma in Marketing Management program will help you to find where your passion in marketing lies. All of our instructors have their Master’s degrees AND at least five years senior level experience in their specialized field of marketing. Each instructor brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and research with them into our classes. And, they have office hours every week specifically to help you with any questions or concerns one-on-one.
If I want to go to UBC or SFU does it transfer?
Almost all of the courses in the Diploma program are university transferable. But, as with any program and course – always check with the institution you want to transfer to ahead of time.
But, it has Math.
Yes, it does, and - we’ve got your back. Langara has a dedicated math centre, peer tutors ready to help you, virtual student hubs, and tons of student support services available to help you every step of your academic journey.
We want you to succeed. It makes us both look good.
What about work experience?
This program can include a Co-operative Education portion. And yes, the co-op term is expected to be in the area you are studying. If you’re in a marketing program, your coop term should be in marketing as well.
Langara College is one of only SIX institutions in Canada that participates in the Disney International Program. Disney were the ones who invented promotional materials for movies! It’s true – it’s cool – it’s life changing. And we have it here. Why do we mention it? Disney International Program counts as Coop credits! I know - you could spend six months working and learning at Disney AND earn a certificate from a top university AND participate in mentoring programs with top Disney executives.
Why our program?
Our Marketing Management programs are designed to help you “hit the ground running” in a marketing department. The field is wide and includes a range of areas. Your time spent at Langara will delve into marketing research, strategy, advertising, working on sales teams, project management, team management, distribution, social media and e-commerce, just to name a few areas you’ll study.
