Langara College is a post-secondary educational institution (the “College”, “Langara”, “we”, “us”, “our”) operating under the statutory authority of British Columbia’s College and Institute Act. This privacy statement describes how the College collects, uses, and discloses personal information received through the College’s website, email, online forms, and social media accounts.
Collection of Personal Information
The College is authorized to collect personal information on this website and through its email system, online forms, and social media accounts pursuant to Section 26 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the “Act”). In the Act, personal information is defined as recorded information about an identifiable individual other than business contact information.
The College collects personal information to provide you with ongoing services, information, and assistance related to your educational needs, to understand your educational needs, to develop and recommend suitable products and services, to manage our operations, and to meet legal and regulatory requirements.
When you send us an email or complete an online form, we collect your email address, IP address, message, attachments and/or form responses so that we may reply to you. If you send us sensitive personal information over the Internet we recommend that you encrypt or otherwise protect the information prior to sending it.
At any time, you can contact us to let us know that you no longer wish to receive communications from us and/or that you wish to have your personal information deleted from our systems. We use reasonable efforts to ensure that your personal information is accurate and complete – to do so, we rely on you informing us of changes or corrections to this information. Use of Personal Information
The College only uses the personal information we collect about you from this website and the College’s email system, online forms, and social media accounts for the same purposes that we collected it. We will not use your personal information for another purpose without your consent unless permitted to do so under applicable law. Your personal information will only be accessible by authorized College employees and representatives or as permitted by applicable law.
Disclosure of Personal Information
Langara College will only disclose your personal information for the same purpose as it was collected. We will otherwise not share the information for any other purpose without your prior written consent provided that the College may be required or authorized by law to disclose your personal information to another party in limited circumstances as outlined in Section 33 of the Act.
Security
Langara uses reasonable and appropriate measures, including encryption software, designed to help us secure your personal information against accidental or unlawful loss, access, or disclosure. Only staff and service providers who have a legitimate purpose for accessing the personal information collected by us are authorized to do so.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
A cookie is a small file that a website creates when you visit the site. It can track and store information about you such as how and when you use a site and which site you visited immediately before.
