Vancouver, BC - Langara College’s student publications from the Journalism Program and Publishing Program have won prestigious Pinnacle Awards this year. Langara Voice won best weekly college newspaper in North America, and Pacific Rim Magazine won best feature magazine of the year. The awards (in the two-year program categories) were announced at a ceremony on October 30th during the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas.
“To be considered the continent’s best weekly college newspaper is a testament to the quality and completeness our program,” Journalism department chair Frances Bula said. “The Voice is the sum of everything journalism students learn here at Langara, from the fundamentals of reporting to beat reporting, from copy editing to design and layout. “It’s important to note that Langara is one of the few Canadian colleges that teaches newspaper layout,” she added.
The newspaper is produced by journalism students from the college’s diploma and certificate programs, and overseen by faculty managing editor Erica Bulman.
For the Publishing Program, this year’s award means back-to-back wins in this competition, having been awarded Best Photo Illustration last year. “It is an honour to be recognized by our peers and speaks to the dedication and vision of our faculty and students,” said Darren Bernaerdt, Pacific Rim Magazine Publisher.
Julie Longo, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, attributes much of the success of both The Voice and Pacific Rim Magazine to the quality of instruction at Langara.
"Students in our Creative Arts programs work with talented, professional faculty members who remain current in their fields and connected to their industriess and communities," said Longo. "Most of our faculty members in Journalism continue to contribute to the nation's top news outlets in print, online, radio, and television broadcasting. Like their Journalism colleagues, faculty members in Publishing insist on industry standards and practices, challenging our students to ask questions about what can be done with what media."
Awarded by the College Media Association — the voice of North American collegiate media and its advisers — the Pinnacles honour the best college media organizations and individual work, produced for any college media organization, including print, broadcast and online outlets.
Nearly 90 per cent of judges were media professionals from The New York Times, The Associated Press, The Chicago Tribune and many others.
