Vancouver, BC – The Board of Governors at Langara College welcomes two new members appointed by the Province of British Columbia. Both individuals have been appointed for an initial one-year term, effective January 1, 2018.
Janelle Dwyer is a business lawyer at Mandell Pinder, LLP where she provides legal advice to First Nations communities on commercial matters, real estate, financing, and corporate structuring. She was previously a director for the Industry Council for Aboriginal Business and a director for Entre Nous Femmes Housing Society. Ms. Dwyer is active in the community and currently serves as a member for the Aboriginal Finance Officers Association’s Advisory Committee and a member for the Splatsin First Nation. She previously held appointments on the National Admission Standards Project Competencies Development Task Force of the Federation of Law Societies and the Fundraising Steering Committee of the Canadian Bar Association’s Aboriginal Law Student Scholarship Trust. Ms. Dwyer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature (Honors) and a Bachelor of Laws degree, both from the University of British Columbia.
Ian Mass is a self-employed non-profit social service consultant with previous experience as a child protection supervisor and a frontline social worker. He was recently the Executive Director of the Pacific Community Resources Society. He has previously held roles as the Executive Director of the Vancity Credit Union Community Foundation; B.C.’s Deputy Advocate, Office of the Child, Youth, and Family; Provincial Coordinator for First Call; and Program Director for Family Services of Greater Vancouver. Mr. Mass volunteers as a board member of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives in B.C. and he has previous board experience with Vancouver Community College, the United Services Cooperative, and the Federation of Community Social Services in B.C. He is active in community journalism and various art organizations. Mr. Mass attended the University of Windsor and holds certificates in cooperative economic studies and non-profit management from Simon Fraser University.

Empowered by the College and Institute Act of British Columbia, the Langara Board of Governors’ primary responsibility is to oversee the strategic direction and management of the College and ensure it carries out its mission. Government-appointed Board members are appointed to an initial one-year term, renewable up to a six-year maximum.
