Vancouver, BC – Langara’s Professional Photography Program will be undergoing a transformation this fall, introducing an exciting mix of technical, business, creative, and digital skills training to better prepare future professional photographers for careers in the industry.
The two-year diploma program has been helping students get their start in the photographic industry for more than 40 years, with hundreds of alumni enjoying successful professional careers in Vancouver and internationally.
The Professional Photography program recently completed a review, which resulted in some exciting changes.. As a result of consultation with current students, alumni and industry, a series of new courses were added that built upon the program’s solid foundation.
“The Program Review provided a valuable opportunity to consult with key stakeholders. Their feedback and insights are reflected in the new curriculum we are launching this fall, “ said Darren Bernaerdt, Department Chair, Professional Photography.
To assist graduates in managing the demands of running a small business, the program will now include two entrepreneurship courses tailored for creative industries. Students will benefit from a new Creativity and Ideation course, gain an appreciation of the history of photography and also the principles of design. Langara School of Management, Art History and Design Formation departments will assist with the delivery of the new courses.
Bernaerdt adds, “More than ever, photographers need to stand out from a crowded marketplace in order to be successful. We are helping our students build a blend of art and commerce that will support them in a wide range of positions in the photographic industry.”
Upon completion of the program, graduates will have a comprehensive portfolio and business plan to launch their new careers. The intake of students in fall 2016 marks the beginning of the new program with those students graduating in spring 2018.
