Nursing Practice in Canada

Vancouver, BC – Langara is proud to announce the successful launch of the post-degree Diploma in Nursing Practice in Canada on September 2. In collaboration with a variety of College departments, the program evolved from a one-year post-degree certificate program to the current two-year post-degree diploma program.

“The response has been phenomenal,” says Janine Lennox, Department Chair, Langara School of Nursing. “From 60 applications, 41 students are enrolled in this first cohort. The interest and reception from our partners in India was incredible. There is clearly a need for this type of program, and we anticipate a similar response when we expand into other countries in 2015.”

“We first developed the Post-Graduate Certificate in Nursing Leadership and Management Program, which was marketed in India and received tremendous response,” says Pat Woods, Assistant Chair, International, Langara School of Nursing. “These students are looking to enhance their nursing knowledge, skills, and familiarity with best international nursing practices. We became very familiar with addressing their learning needs and realized a more comprehensive two-year program would be of greater benefit, so we expanded the curriculum to become this post-degree diploma program.”

“As a determined and aspiring nurse, I always look towards updating my nursing practice,” says Norbu Dolma, student of the Langara PDD Nursing Practice in Canada program. “Langara offered the course I was looking for to help me expand my nursing knowledge and to learn the most current evidence-based practice from abroad.”

Unique in Canada, the PDD program includes extensive use of simulation and two full years of nursing exam preparation, providing participants with a greater understanding of the Western health care context in preparation for entering the workforce. It is designed for Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) as a bridging program to effectively prepare them for eligibility and application to nurse licensure and nursing practice positions in the Canadian health care system.

This first cohort has been limited to nurses from India to address an identified market need, but in building on the successful launch of the program, it will be offered to IENs from other countries by Summer 2015. Domestic students have also indicated interest in the program, as it provides them with their best opportunity to become eligible to write and pass the nursing licensure and work as nurses in Canada.
