Vancouver, BC – The Langara Falcons badminton team have scooped the coveted top spot in the national standings this week as the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) released their rankings for the first half of the 2013/2014 season.
The team started out the season in stellar form, taking gold at their first tournament of the year in a surprise victory over the conference favourites Douglas College. Halfway through the season Langara sits at the top of the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) with an impressive 651 points, and the team was announced as the leader in the CCAA rankings earlier this week.
"It's great news to hear the Falcons have risen to the top in the country," said Assistant Coach Bonnie Cheng. "The team has worked extremely hard and it is a well deserved accomplishment."
The Falcons took first place in PACWEST tournament #1 on the weekend of October 19th after a solid performance from the entire team and a standout first place finish from men's singles player Matthew Chan. They lost a little bit of ground in tournament #2 on the weekend of November 23rd, coming in second, but have held on to the top spot in the conference with 651 points in total. Douglas College sits in second place with 637, and Kwantlen rounds out the top three with 469.
The next tournament for the Falcons will be in the new year, over the weekend of February 1st, at Thompson Rivers University.
