Vancouver, BC – Langara extends its congratulations to Falcons soccer player Courtney Sheppard, who has been recognized as this season’s first Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) Athlete of the Week for Langara.
The first-year central midfielder, originally from Port Moody, BC, was awarded the honour after an outstanding pair of matches this past weekend against the Quest University Kermodes. Sheppard proved to be a major difficulty for the opposing team during Saturday's home game at BCIT field, slipping deft passes through their defenses to the Falcons’ strikers. She also counted an assist on Langara’s second goal of the game, scored by Lauren Tasaka. Saturday’s match ended 2-0 in Langara’s favour.
Her performance was equally impressive during Sunday’s rematch in Squamish, which saw Sheppard work tirelessly in the midfield and score the game-winning goal in the 50th minute. The final score remained 1-0 for the College, meaning they took home a massive six points this weekend, vaulting them into second place in the conference standings.
"It is nice to see Courtney be recognized as the Athlete of the Week because week in and week out she is the hardest working player in the park,” said the team’s head coach Ryan Birt. “Courtney possesses a tremendous amount of skill and has been the engine that drives our midfield. I cannot think of a more deserving athlete."
The Falcons hit the road for matches against Vancouver Island University and Capilano University this weekend, October 6th and 7th.
