Punjabi Market Tour
Saturday, May 28
2:00 pm-4:00 pm

Limted spaces available. Registration in advance required.

From its humble beginnings, Main Street transformed into a cultural hub and was home of the first Punjabi-language street signs outside of Asia. At its peak, Punjabi Market was home to over 300 shops including 24 jewellery stores. Participants of this tour will learn more about the rich history of this area, its people, culture, food, and more from a local Punjabi Market Collective guide. With treats from the local community in hand, participants will end the tour with a better understanding of the historical and contemporary impact of this thriving neighbourhood located right next to Langara’s main campus!

Please note this guided walking tour around the Punjabi Market neighbourhood will cover a distance of about 2 kilometres. The tour will proceed rain or shine.

Event Registration

This event is open to all Langara community members (students, staff, and faculty) and the general public. Registration required in advance.

About Asian Heritage Month

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, a time to reflect on and celebrate the contributions that Canadians of Asian descent have made and continue to make, to the growth and prosperity of Canada.

Asian Heritage Month has been celebrated across Canada since the 1990s. In December 2001, the Senate of Canada adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.
