Jan 15, 2021

Like the current semester, the Summer 2021 semester, which begins in May, will be primarily online, with face-to-face instruction limited to courses or course modules that require in-person instruction to achieve learning outcomes. Registration for the Summer semester will open in March 2021.

We know many of you are eager to return to in-person instruction, and we do not take this decision lightly. While we are encouraged by the start of COVID-19 vaccinations in British Columbia, given what we know at this time about the rollout of that program, we do not anticipate that most members of our community will have been fully vaccinated by the start of the semester in May. As a result, we anticipate that physical distancing will remain a necessary safety layer, which prevents us from having a large increase in instruction on campus. Given that, and our commitment to protecting the health and safety of our community, we feel it is best to extend our current approach for the Summer semester. We will continue to monitor the progress of vaccinations and guidance from the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) before making any decisions about instruction for the Fall semester.

Decisions about whether non-instructional employees will return to working on campus in the summer term have not yet been made, as we are waiting for updates from the Provincial Health Officer. We will provide information to employees as we get closer to the start of term, and have more information at that point about the status of any orders relating to working from home and the vaccine rollout.

Thank you for your continued patience with this challenging situation, and for your ongoing adherence to our health and safety protocols. Your efforts are working to keep our Langara community safe.

As always, your feedback and questions can be sent to us at covidquestions@langara.ca. Our updates for students can be found on langara.ca/covid.
