Academic Concessions
We understand that the circumstances under which you are finishing your semester are challenging, and we are receiving a lot of questions about, and requests for, academic concessions. To support students through this time, we have significantly extended the date by which students can withdraw from courses for this term. You can now withdraw until April 3 (see our March 24 update).
If you prefer to finish your course work, but need a bit more time, you can request a deferral. In order to submit a deferral for the spring semester, complete the Deferred Standing Request Form (which is a fillable pdf) and attach it to an email to appeals@langara.ca . Your email must come from the email associated with your Langara account (name@mylangara.ca). Review the terms set out in the Withdrawal and Deferred standing policy but please note, that due to the current strain on our health system, medical notes will no longer be required for this Spring 2020 semester.
For those students who are intending to complete their courses, please note that it is important we continue to provide students with grades. As a primarily university –transfer institution, we know that many of our students intend to transfer their courses to other institutions to further their education after they finish their studies at Langara. We do not want to negatively impact any students requesting transfer credit in the future for courses where a pass/fail grade was given.
Financial Help and Tuition Fees
We know this is a challenging time for our students - many of you are studying here in Vancouver, away from your family and friends. Please know that we’re working very hard to help both domestic and international students who need financial support. Over the past two weeks, our Financial Aid department has distributed $24,700 in Emergency Bursary funding to students, and our Community Cupboard has provided food for over 4,100 meals. The Langara College Foundation has provided $100,000 to supplement the resources in our Emergency Bursary Fund and is actively fundraising for more. To learn more about these resources, please visit: https://langara.ca/news-and-events/covid-19/resources.html.
Some students have reached out to us with questions about tuition fees. While the delivery format of our courses has changed, they continue to be taught by our experienced faculty, and students will earn full academic credit (just the same as in-person instruction). We know this transition to online learning has happened quickly. Our priority is to keep our community safe, and to continue delivering the best education possible. To accomplish that, tuition fees will remain the same as previously announced.
