The Nutrition and Food Service Management Program at Langara College provides information regarding employment opportunities, educational sessions, and other networking possibilities to those in the food service management profession. Most of the positions will require the individual to have membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management or be a registered dietitian.

Transferability

Courses that transfer to other schools

The majority of the food service and nutrition theory courses in the Nutrition and Food Service Management (NSFM) Diploma program are transferable to other post-secondary institutions. The recommended support courses are also transferable.

FSRV and NUTR academic courses are university transferable. Several, in combination, transfer to third and fourth year dietetics at UBC. These upper level courses are also available for dietetic upgrading required by provincial regulatory bodies.

UT courses offered by the department are:

  • FSRV 1113 and FSRV 1213
  • FSRV 3114 and FSRV 3214
  • NUTR 2112 and 2212
  • FSRV 4324
  • FSRV 4323

Sports Nutrition (NUTR 2500) and Introduction to Nutrition (NUTR 1100) are science elective courses which transfer to other schools as well.

Courses and experience transferring into the department

A prior learning assessment is available for up to four first-year courses for students with related food service experience, for students in the NFSM program. Eligibility is based on assessment by the department chair, upon admission.

Graduates of baccalaureate programs in nutrition or dietetics may enter the Nutrition and Food Service Management program in second year provided that they meet the requirement for experience in the food service industry. Upon approval of advanced standing credit (30 credits) and completion of 30 credits from the program, a diploma in Nutrition and Food Service Management will be granted. Internationally-trained dietitians who wish to pursue the Nutrition and Food Service Management program would have their translated credentials assessed individually upon admission. Graduates are eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management and regional associations. Students with a nutrition degree or dietetic degree should apply to the Advanced Standing stream of the Nutrition and Food Service Management Program.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) transfer

Completion of the Nutrition and Food Service Management diploma qualifies graduates to ladder into third-year of the BBA program at Langara after completion of the required bridging courses. Students interested in this path should register in the BBA path of NFSM program.

If a student has completed the NSFM and did not complete the BBA stream, but has come to a place in their career where they do want to complete a Bachelor in Business Administration degree, a few bridging courses will be required. It is recommended to consult with the receiving school for their requirements.
