Film Arts Certificate – Directing

Students in the the Film Arts Directing Certificate will direct two festival quality films and garner on-screen credits as a director during this dynamic eight-month program.

In collaboration with your fellow actors, writers, and directors you’ll also have credits as a director of photography, editor, and producer.

Hard work? You bet.

You need drive, ambition, a solid work ethic, teamwork skills, and energy to burn in order to succeed in this career path. Our yearly Film Arts Festival screening event is the launch pad for the films that your team will promote and screen worldwide.

Directing Stream students will learn how to:

  • Clearly express, through a director’s notebook, their narrative and visual ideas to their key crew members including the writer, actor, designer and cinematographer.
  • Block and rehearse creatively and confidently with actors.
  • Light, shoot, edit, and post produce high-definition video projects for festival submissions.

About Film Arts

Langara College Film Arts is an eight-month, intensive, collaborative, and comprehensive program for students wishing to work in today’s film industry as actors, writers, or directors.

The program runs from January through August.

The development and inspiration for the Film Arts program grew out of Langara's well known Theatre Arts/ Studio 58 program and its successful conservatory approach to training actors and production personnel in theatre.

The Film Arts program offers post-accreditation certificates in three streams of study; Writing for the Screen, Acting for the Screen, and Directing for the Screen.

Each certificate is a stand-alone program.

Courses in film studies, film principles, and film practice overlap resulting in a creative and collaborative environment in which students will practice their skills with the other creators in each craft area. These overlapping courses are designed so students will develop a dynamic understanding of the film making process.

The Film Arts program is for dedicated students committed to imaginative exploration and to honing and upgrading their skills and knowledge in film.

Courses in film studies, industry practices, the principles and business of film production, and career preparation will give students in all streams the knowledge to embark on creative film careers.

Instructors are working professionals who bring their expertise and experience into the classroom. Meet our faculty.

Students graduate with a high degree of proficiency in their chosen stream, equipped with a wide range of knowledge and practical skills and an impressive portfolio of work.
