Vancouver, BC – Langara College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ann Syme as the new Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, effective August 20, 2018.
An experienced public sector and academic healthcare leader, Dr. Syme brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Dean role. With an MSc and PhD in Nursing, Dr. Syme’s career has ranged from bedside nursing to executive health care research. She possesses extensive clinical experience and years of progressive senior leadership in health care systems.
“Ann Syme is ideally suited to lead the new Faculty of Nursing in academic planning and applied research initiatives,” said Martin Gerson, Interim Provost and Vice-President, Academic. “We are very pleased to welcome her to Langara.”
She was previously the Associate Dean, Nursing at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and teaches at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). She has also held the positions of Director, HR Planning & Design and Education at Northern Health from 2015-2017; Senior Director, Palliative Institute at Covenant Health from 2012 to 2014; and Provincial Director at the British Columbia Cancer Agency from 1998-2011.
The Dean is the senior academic leader and manager for the Faculty of Nursing and provides strategic leadership for a mix of career, university transfer, post-degree credentials, and baccalaureate programs in the Faculty. The Dean promotes and supports activities that advance teaching and learning, as well as emerging scholarship and applied research activities within the area.
