Langara College is pleased to announce a new Youth In Care bursary program. Starting in the fall of 2014, the four-year pilot program allocates $200,000 annually for bursaries for British Columbians who have lived in care. The aim of the program is to increase the students’ access to and participation in post-secondary education.

Each Youth in Care Bursary will cover up to the costs of tuition and student fees. The exact value of each bursary will vary depending upon the number of applicants and each students’ demonstrated need.

In 2013, post-secondary institutions in British Columbia were challenged by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth, to waive tuition fees for children in care. This new bursary will help break down the financial barriers these students face to accessing the post-secondary system.

“We are very pleased to offer Youth in Care Bursaries to our students who have grown up in the care system,” says Dr. Lane Trotter, President and CEO of Langara College. “This initiative will make such a difference to the lives of many of our students. I hope they will take full advantage of this opportunity, and be inspired to pursue a brighter future.”

Langara students who are BC residents that received government care in their youth are eligible for this bursary if they are enrolled in a minimum 60% of a full-time, regular-studies course load, are in good standing or a returning student with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher, are in their first credential program, and have demonstrated financial need. More information may be found on the Langara Bursaries page.
