The 2012 edition of Pacific Rim Magazine.
Vancouver, BC – The 24th issue of Pacific Rim Magazine
hit newsstands this week, after a successful launch at the Arthur Erickson
Waterfall Building on Wednesday, May 9.
The issue, created by students in Langara’s
Publishing Program, has the theme “exploring connections across cultures
within the Pacific Rim while showcasing emerging talent.” The publication
highlights local talents like gift card designer Shannon Barnes, as well as
cultural treasures including author Larry Wong. Features include a look into
the life of the NHL’s first Asian player Larry “King” Kwong, alongside the
incredible story of Sarith Keo, a Cambodian refugee who fled the Khmer Rouge
in the 1970s.
All stories are researched and written by the Publishing students, who invested
over 3,000 hours in the development of the magazine. This year 18,500 copies were produced
for distribution through the Globe and Mail on May 9, as well as for purchase on select newsstands. Additional research was provided by students in the Library and Information Technology Program, with feature photography by Langara's Photo-Imaging students and ad sales completed by students from Langara's School of Marketing.
"I am very impressed with the depth and range of talent
demonstrated by the
Publishing Program students,” said Darren Bernaerdt, Publisher. "This
edition continues to build upon the strength of the publication.”
The Publishing diploma program at Langara College teaches students to use the latest publishing tools and techniques in a collaborative environment that cultivates the professional attitudes and creativity needed to excel in a publishing career. Each year, students collaborate to design and produce Pacific Rim Magazine, a glossy, full-colour publication that is distributed in the Globe and Mail across the Lower Mainland.
