What is COVID-19?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found mostly in animals. In humans, they can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The new coronavirus has been named COVID-19. While many characteristics are still unknown, mild to severe illness has been reported for confirmed cases.

If you are concerned that you, or someone you have been exposed to, may be experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 (for example dry cough or fever), please stay home and self-isolate for 14 days. COVID-19 presents as a mild illness in the majority of patients; testing is not recommended for those who have mild respiratory symptoms. The BC Centre for Disease Control has a self-assessment tool that you can assess symptoms. If symptoms worsen, please call 8-1-1 or your health care provider.

The province has created a phone service to provide non-medical information about COVID-19, including the latest information on travel recommendations and social distancing. Information is available in more than 110 languages, 7:30 am-8:00 pm at 1.888.COVID19 (1.888.268.4319) or via text message at 604.630.0300.

Practice health habits.

Help reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses such as coronavirus, colds, and influenza:

  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • If a sink is not available, hand sanitizer can be used to clean hands if they are not visibly soiled. If they are visibly soiled, you can use an alcohol-based disposable hand wipe to remove the dirt and then use hand sanitizer.
  • Don't touch your face/eyes/mouth with unwashed hands.
  • When you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or the crease of
your elbow and then wash your hands.
  • Stay home when you are ill. If you are showing symptoms, self-isolate immediately.
