Valerie Lloyd
Dr. Lloyd (she/her) is an instructor at Langara College currently teaching Introductory and Cognitive Psychology courses.
Dr. Lloyd earned a B.A. in Psychology; an M.A. in Developmental Psychology (infant language acquisition); and a Ph.D. in Perception/Cognition/Environment (memory and language perception in adulthood) from the University of British Columbia.
She was the recipient of the Stanley Coren Psychology Prize for an outstanding achievement in a Master of Arts Thesis in Psychology (1994), and a two-year NSERC Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral program (1994).
Dr. Lloyd has co-authored papers in the journal Developmental Psychology, and the book Signal to Syntax – Bootstrapping from Speech to Grammar in Early Acquisition. She has also presented her research at numerous international Developmental and Cognitive Psychology Conferences.
Prior to her university studies, Dr. Lloyd worked as a Dental Nursing and a filmmaker – most notably assistant film editor on “The Beachcombers” original TV series for several seasons at CBC, Vancouver.
Dr. Lloyd’s first teaching position was at North Island College in 1994 on Vancouver Island where she taught Introductory Psychology and Developmental Psychology.
At Langara College since 1995, Dr. Lloyd has taught courses including Introductory Psychology (1115 & 1215), Developmental Psychology (2324, 2318 & 2328), Cognitive Psychology (2341), and Family Studies (Marriage and Family). She has also taught Speech Perception in the Graduate School of Audiology and Speech Sciences at UBC.
Dr. Lloyd has served as Chair and Assistant Chair for the Langara Psychology Department. She has found it a privilege to be a part of such a knowledgeable and dedicated group of individuals.
Furthermore, Dr. Lloyd has previously served on the Langara Research Committee for a decade and is currently the Langara Faculty Association representative on the Workplace Health, Safety and Environment Committee (WHSEC) Standing Committee of Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of B.C. (FPSE; for eight years).
Dr. Lloyd was delighted to be asked by the students to serve as the first Faculty Sponsor for the inaugural Langara Student Psychology Club during its first several years.
She speaks English fluently, and French and Spanish at a basic level.
Her hobbies include gardening, ice fishing, skiing, and spending time at her family’s organic farm.
Highlights of Dr. Lloyd’s time at Langara College include observing students get excited about psychology and assisting them in developing their research and academic skills. She has always found it an honour to be a small part of each student’s academic journey.
