Description

Credential/Course Block Transfer

Langara College Diploma in Registered Massage Therapy → 2911 hours of study or 78 PLAR credits towards Thompson Rivers University Bachelor of Health Science 

Objective of the Agreement

TRU offers its students, and is empowered to grant, degrees to the graduates of the following programs delivered on campus or online and further described in Schedule B hereto (the “TRU” program).

  • Bachelor of Health Science

The College offers its students the following program further described in Schedule A hereto (the College Program): 

  • Continuing Studies Diploma in Registered Massage Therapy

The College Program is approved by the College’s Educational Council and is recognized by the Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation (https://www.cmtca.ca/). The Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation is the body responsible for developing accreditation standards for massage therapy education and accrediting massage therapy education programs in Canada.
The College Program has a current accreditation period from June 22, 2023 until June 22, 2028. 
TRU and the College wish to collaborate in facilitating enrolment of eligible graduates of the College in the TRU Program.

Admission

a. TRU agrees to accept the College students who apply for admission to the TRU Programs subject to the applicant’s:

i. successful completion of the College Program during the period commencing July 27, 2025 and ending on the termination of this Agreement (the “Acceptance Period”); and

ii. fulfillment of admission requirements set out in Schedule B.

b. Graduates of the College Program who graduated from the College prior to the commencement of the Acceptance Period are eligible to receive the same number of PLAR credits as set out in Schedule B, subject to the following conditions:

i. the College Program from which the student graduated is the same as was evaluated by TRU in terms of learning outcomes, in-class contact hours, and weeks of study;

ii. the graduate meets all TRU program and admission criteria set out in Schedule B; and

c. one of the following applies:

i. the College Program meets the requirements set out in Section C.1 at the time the student graduated; or

ii. the graduate has successfully obtained licensure as a Massage Therapist in any Canadian province that regulates the profession through a recognized professional body.

d. Graduates of the College Program who do not meet the above criteria for eligibility may petition for possible credit through another one of TRU’s PLAR pathways.

Schedule B – TRU Program

TRU Program Requirements:

Program requirements are subject to change. The current program requirements are set out

below.

 

Bachelor of Health Science
Admission Requirements

Completion of, or proof of enrolment in, a minimum two-year diploma in health care or related area from a recognized program and institution.

 

Residency Requirements

A minimum of 15 TRU credits (distance or on-campus); specifically, completion of two health (HLTH) courses delivered by TRU-OL, selected from HLTH 3101, 4011, 4021, or approved equivalent.

 

Degree Requirements

120 credits, including at least 45 upper-level credits, with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 (a grade of C) or higher over all courses required for the credential, as follows:

 

Lower-Level Requirements (12 credits)

6 credits in first-year English (university-level composition and literature, e.g. ENGL 1001 or ENGL 1011 or ENGL 1101), if not granted as part of the transfer credit from a diploma program.

3 credits in introductory statistics

3 credits in humanities (other than English), including FRAN, FREN, GERM, GREK, HIST, HUMN, PHIL, SPAN, WOST

 

Upper-Level Requirements (9 credits)

3 credits in research methods (RSMT 3501 or approved upper-level equivalency)

6 credits in HLTH 3101, HLTH 4011 or HLTH 4021

 

Elective Requirements (number of credits varies, depending on transfer credit granted)

At least 15 credits of required coursework must be academic electives, with a minimum of 6 upper-level credits.

 

All electives must be selected in consultation with a program advisor to ensure they are appropriate for the program and meet the student’s educational goals. 

 

Academic electives are courses not considered as professional development, applied studies or advanced training. Thus, credit for ANES, POLY, RESP and HLTH courses are limited because some are considered non-academic. Courses that are related to the content given as part of the block transfer will not be considered for additional credit towards this degree.

 

PLAR Credit:

 

The College Program articulates the following PLAR credits into the following TRU Program:

 

Continuing Studies in Registered Massage Therapy diploma program is granted a maximum of 78 PLAR HLTH credits into the Bachelor of Health Science as detailed in Schedule C.
