Pranav Sharma's practicum at Locher Evers International not only provided him with valuable hands-on experience in supply chain management but also led to a job offer in the same department. Through mentorship and proactive learning, his experience exemplifies how internships foster professional growth and benefit both students and employers.
When Pranav Sharma walked into Locher Evers International for his practicum, he knew he was stepping into something new. A Supply Chain and Logistics (SCL) post-degree diploma student at Langara, he had a solid base from his courses. Still, the real test was putting learning to work in a fast-paced logistics environment.
“I started as a Customer Solutions Specialist in the Manifest Department,” Pranav recalls. “My role involved handling all required documentation prior to vessel arrival to ensure cargo was customs-cleared with no pending paperwork or payments. Later, I transitioned to the Inland Freight department, where I coordinated shipment movements within Canada and cross-border to the U.S.”
This hands-on immersion taught him lessons that no textbook could capture. “During my practicum, I gained valuable skills beyond my classroom learning. I earned my CargoWise Certified Operator certification… Key skills I developed include time management, meeting tight deadlines, and maintaining strong attention to detail.”
Power of mentorship that makes a difference.
Behind this journey of growth are mentors who believe in the value of nurturing new talent. Rishabh Manchanda, now a Key Account Manager, knows this first-hand. “I actually started in this company as an intern myself about seven years ago. I took the post-degree diploma in Supply Chain and Logistics at Langara College Continuing Studies back then. That experience gave me a real understanding of how the company works and helped me build the skills I needed to grow. Over time, I moved up and now I’m a Key Account Manager.”
For him, welcoming practicum students isn’t simply about filling a seat. “Having students with us is a great opportunity to pass on real-world knowledge and help them gain hands-on experience… It’s also a great way for us to contribute to the development of future professionals who may even become part of our team down the line.”
Pranav felt that support. Even with the office under renovation and most employees working remotely, his manager showed up in person to train him. “My colleagues were also extremely helpful, patiently explaining new processes and assisting me as I adapted to my role.”
A practicum that opens doors.
Practicums can shape careers in ways students don’t expect. For Pranav, it led to more than new skills. “Yes, after completing my practicum at Locher Evers International, I received a job offer in the same department where I had been trained.”
Employers benefit, too. Fresh eyes often notice things that busy long-time staffers overlook. As Rishabh explains, “Bringing fresh talent into our workplace gives us new perspectives and ideas that can lead to simple but meaningful improvements. Their energy and eagerness to learn helps us create a positive atmosphere that motivates the whole team.”
Some interns even grow into leaders. “One great example is the current team lead who started with us as an intern a few years ago… Today, they manage one of our key accounts and lead a team.”
Beyond just “showing up."
For students considering a practicum through Langara’s SCL program, Pranav has one piece of advice: “Make the most of the eight weeks, as it’s a short period to learn everything. Be proactive, ask questions, and absorb as much knowledge as possible. Opportunities like these—where people are willing to teach and guide you—are valuable. Avoid treating it as just ‘showing up’ for the day; instead, take every chance to learn and grow.”
The bigger picture.
The stories of Rishabh and Pranav show how mentorship, real-world application, and mutual growth create a pathway from the classroom to lasting careers. As Rishabh puts it, “It’s about investing in future talent who can become valuable members of the team and even leaders one day.”
A practicum is more than a requirement for SCL program. It’s the start of a chapter that often leads straight into the supply chain and logistics field.
