Langara College's Dental Reception Short Certificate program can be completed in 11 weekends or 17 weeks (evening/weekday). The program will prepare students for in-demand dental receptionist roles in dental offices across British Columbia. With flexible learning options, hands-on training, and strong ties to the dental field, graduates leave ready to work and make an impact.
Langara College is making significant strides in equipping British Columbians with the skills necessary for successful careers.
Offered through Continuing Studies, the Dental Reception short certificate program speaks directly to people who want meaningful work in dental clinics and patient-focused settings. Delivered part-time and in-person over 11 weekends or 17 weeks (evening/weekday), the program blends classroom learning with real-word practice led by subject matter expert instructors who know the field firsthand.
Flexible learning options
With three intakes each year—September, January, and May—the program fits into busy lives. As program coordinator, Gemma Oropesa, explains, "The program is a fast pathway to employment. Students will become job-ready in dental reception by learning directly from industry professionals in as little as one term.”
Essential skills for success
The program is well known for connecting students with the dental industry early on. Instructor Shelly Prasad puts it simply: "We try to not just teach, but train students on what is required in a dental office now so that you can get a job when you graduate. Employers or dental offices want to know that students know about practice management software, digital x-rays, and dental insurance."
This insight allows students to enter the workforce with confidence, equipped with the knowledge sought by potential employers. This proactive approach ensures that students understand the tools, the pace, and the human side of working with patients; skills that matter every day at the front desk.
Program graduate Laura Mulkerrins shares, "Taking the Dental Reception program with Langara was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was able to take the course at a time that worked with my schedule and it equipped me with the knowledge I needed to find work before the course was completed. I am very grateful for the experience and knowledge of my teacher who made learning fun and engaging. I highly recommend this program to anyone thinking about becoming a Dental Receptionist, as the certificate is wildly requested from reputable practices."
Commitment to equitable access
Langara College is currently offering free tuition-funded English pathway courses for people who want to strengthen their English language skills and prepare for careers in dental reception through the English Language Learning (ELL) Pathways. These courses are designed to build practical workplace communication, terminology, and confidence needed to succeed in a dental office environment. Even better, students who are enrolled in the Dental Reception English Pathways may also be eligible to have their tuition for the Dental Reception Program funded through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant, making it more affordable than ever to move from language learning into a recognized career pathway.
This funding helps remove barriers for students aspiring to upskill or change careers, making quality education accessible to a wider audience. Oropesa notes the importance of this support, even reminding prospective students that the certification is "a bonus," but emphasizes, "students’ personality, computer skills, and customer service" are equally crucial for standing out in a competitive job market. Those qualities are built into the learning experience from day one.
Real outcomes and community impact
Graduate success is a clear focus of the Dental Reception program. Many graduates find work soon after completing the certificate, supported by the relationships they form along the way. As Prasad shares, "We've had alumni return as guest speakers and to share their experiences with the program and how it led to securing jobs." These connections help foster a sense of community and provide invaluable insights into the job-search process.
Langara College cultivates strong relationships with industry partners, ensuring that the curriculum remains current and relevant. This is particularly beneficial for students whose classes are kept intentionally small, allowing for increased engagement and a more personalized learning experience.
Shaping the future of dental reception
The Dental Reception program not only prepares students for successful careers in a dynamic field but also emphasizes the broader impact of education on community well-being. As the program continues to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of both students and employers, it remains a vital resource for those looking to thrive in the dental industry.
