The Applied Research Centre’s Seminar Series showcases Langara faculty members sharing their experiences as researchers at the College.

Hear about Prashant Kumar’s research

This project introduces a mobile-friendly web application that provides real-time availability of essential community services, including shelter beds, meals, hygiene facilities, and warming/cooling centers across Surrey and Burnaby. Authorized staff at partner agencies can update listings instantly, ensuring individuals and outreach workers receive accurate, trustworthy information when it matters most.

Supported by SPARC BC and SACH (South Asian Community Hub), this initiative strengthens community partnerships, enhances data for advocacy and social policy efforts, and delivers a scalable, practical model that other communities can adopt to improve equity, inclusion, and access to essential services. The project is funded by SPARC BC, NSERC, and Mitacs.

Dr. Prashant Kumar is the coordinator of the Bioinformatics program and the assistant department chair of Biology at the College. His research specializes in the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds in nature. His expertise includes biomolecule isolation, purification, characterization, and antimicrobial assays. He is deeply committed to talent development and hands on student learning, finding great fulfillment in mentoring students as they contribute to meaningful, community focused research. Guided by a strong commitment to community wellbeing, Prashant now leads an innovative project that connects people in need with essential services in real time through a smart, user-centered mobile application.
