Celebrating distinguished service.
Emeritus is Latin for "those having merited discharge by service". It is an honorary title conferred to retiring or retired faculty members and professional staff to recognize their distinguished service to an organization. Langara College introduced the Emeritus/Emerita Designation Policy in 2013.

2026 Emeritus Award Recipients
In June, at Langara's Convocation Ceremonies, our 2026 award recipients were recognized for their distinguished service and outstanding contributions.
Dr. Janet Douglas, Faculty Emerita, Social Services
Dr. Janet Douglas | Faculty Emerita, Social Services
A member of the Langara graduating class of 1980, Dr. Janet Douglas was a child protection social worker in B.C. for over 30 years before serving sixteen years as a faculty member in the Social Services Department. Her leadership extended across the institution through her foundational work with the Teaching and Curriculum Development Centre, her role in establishing Langara as a research institution, and her thoughtful contributions to major policy and committee work. Janet’s collaborative and principled approach, integrity, and ability to bring people together have strengthened relationships among faculty, administration, and the union. Her long-standing service to the Langara Faculty Association, including stewarding, bargaining, and mentoring, reflects her dedication to fairness and constructive problem-solving. The first person awarded a PhD in Social Work by UBC, Janet has consistently gone above and beyond to support students, programs, and the broader college community.
Janet retired from Langara in December 2025.
Sarah Bowers, Faculty Emerita, Educational Technology, and Teaching & Curriculum Development
Sarah Bowers | Faculty Emerita, Educational Technology, and Teaching & Curriculum Development
Since joining the English department in 1997, Sarah Bowers’ contributions to Langara continue to have long-lasting impacts. She joined Educational Technology in 2010, extending her influence across the province as vice-chair of the Educational Technology Users Group. In 2013, Sarah helped found the Teaching Curriculum and Development Centre, creating a welcoming and supportive centre for teaching excellence. She engaged departments in program development, renewal, and review, and helped faculty establish learning outcomes, align assessments, and adopt active learning strategies. She designed workshops for faculty at all stages of their careers and led the College’s Universal Design for Learning initiatives. As an early adopter of educational technologies, Sarah also developed hybrid and online classes well before the COVID pandemic required her, along with the teams in TCDC and EdTech, to help instructors pivot to remote teaching. Sarah returned to TCDC part-time in 2024, bringing back her enthusiasm and expertise.
Sarah retired from Langara in June 2023.
Courtenay Dobbie, Artistic Director Emerita, Theatre Arts
Courtenay Dobbie | Artistic Director Emerita, Theatre Arts
Courtenay Dobbie (1978–2024) was a beloved and transformative figure in Canadian theatre whose warmth, boldness, and dedication left a lasting mark on all who knew her. A graduate of Studio 58 at Langara College, she went on to serve as a faculty member and Artistic Director of the program from 2017 until her passing in 2024. Prior to Studio 58, Courtenay acted, directed, and choreographed across BC and Canada, and served as Artistic Director of the celebrated Caravan Farm Theatre in Armstrong, BC. She directed large-scale musicals at Studio 58 and guided the program through extraordinary challenges with creativity and care, including a successful fundraising campaign for new seating. Known for her infectious passion and community-centred leadership, Courtenay prioritized student well-being above all. Her legacy lives on in the Courtenay Dobbie Theatre Scholarship and in the countless artists she inspired.
Pari Ranjbary, Faculty Emerita, Physics & Astronomy
Pari Ranjbary | Faculty Emerita, Physics & Astronomy
Joining the college in 1989, Pari Ranjbary made history as the first instructor to hold simultaneous appointments in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics, before dedicating herself fully to Physics — a discipline in which she inspired thousands of students to pursue careers in science, engineering, and leadership. During her remarkable 36-year career at Langara College, Pari was celebrated for her exceptional teaching, innovative curriculum development, and authorship of comprehensive laboratory manuals. She served as Acting Department Chair and contributed meaningfully to faculty hiring and college committees in a leadership capacity. A passionate and outspoken advocate for equity and inclusion, Pari championed the success of women and Indigenous students in STEM throughout her career, fostering a more diverse and welcoming academic community.
Susan M.M. Todd, Faculty Emerita, Kinesiology
Susan M.M. Todd | Faculty Emerita, Kinesiology
Susan holds a Master of Science from the University of Oregon, which focused on an interdisciplinary approach involving human growth and motor development, adapted physical activity, therapeutic recreation, and special education. Her academic foundation was enriched by an EXTEND-ED Fellowship, providing hands-on experience serving individuals of all abilities across the lifespan.
Over her remarkable 51-year tenure at Langara College (1974–2025), Susan taught a broad range of courses, served as the Recreation Leadership program coordinator and the department chair when it was still known as the Department of Human Performance and Recreation, and developed an applied learning initiative assessing community participants from infancy through adulthood. She devoted her career to advancing knowledge in development by pouring countless hours into her course material and sharing her expertise generously with students and colleagues alike. Her innovative partnership with the Langara Daycare stands as a hallmark of her commitment to experiential education and community connection.
Beyond Langara, Susan also taught at UBC for over a decade, was a course conductor for the National Coaching certification program, and contributed to numerous community associations and boards, reflecting a lifelong commitment to physical literacy and inclusive well-being.
2025 Emeritus Award Recipients
Gerda Krause, Dean Emerita, Faculty of Science
Gerda Krause | Dean Emerita, Faculty of Science
With over 45 years of service to Langara, Gerda has excelled in various roles including instructor, department chair, division chair, and dean. She also chaired the Education Council and served on Langara’s Board of Governors. Her exceptional leadership, mentorship, and compassion made a significant impact on the Langara community. Gerda co-founded 49Women in Science, supporting women's representation in STEM, and secured funds for scholarships and bursaries. She played a key role in the Tri-Mentoring program for female engineering students, bridging the knowledge gap and fostering their growth. Beyond the College, Gerda has served on various committees within the Mennonite Church and supports community projects such as transition houses. Her unwavering commitment, generosity, and desire to make a positive difference enriches the lives of those she encounters. Gerda wears her heart on her sleeve, always caring for others and striving to make Langara and the community better.
Dr. Stephen Phillips, Faculty Emeritus, Political Science
Dr. Stephen Phillips | Faculty Emeritus, Political Science
Dr. Stephen Phillips retires in 2025 after 31 years of dedicated service teaching political science at Langara. He studied law and political science at the University of Alberta before earning his PhD at UBC in 1999. During his tenure at Langara, Stephen served as department chair and political science co-ordinator for a total of 17 years. Long active in the BC Political Studies Association, he served as its president, organized several conferences, and presented numerous papers. Stephen contributed to scholarly literature by writing book chapters on politics and public affairs. He also enhanced Langara’s academic reputation by submitting written briefs to various public bodies. Stephen was a frequent participant in Langara's community lecture series and was keenly involved in the Langara Faculty Association (LFA), serving on its board of directors and co-editing its newsletter, Faculty Affairs.
2024 Emeritus Award Recipient
Darrell Kean, Faculty Emeritus, Criminal Justice
Darrell Kean began his career as a police officer for the City of Vancouver. He joined Langara in 1991, as a Criminal Justice instructor. His combination of academic and real-world experiences provided his students with a unique view into the criminal justice system. Darrell's involvement at Langara spanned 33 years, where he honed his leadership skills in roles such as Department Chair, Division Chair, Langara Faculty Association Vice President, Chief Steward, and LFA Board Executive. As a consultant for Federal, Provincial, Municipal and First Nations governments, including the Oppal Commission of Inquiry into Policing in British Columbia, Darrell was instrumental in helping to bring wholesale change to police recruitment and training.
