Commitment to Indigenous Learners

Langara proudly implemented the first formal Aboriginal Education Policy in British Columbia in 2004. The policy was implemented to increase the success rates and the representation and retention of Indigenous students.

We continue to develop pathways and supports for Indigenous learners, including advocacy and counselling services, transfer agreements, and financial aid.

Transfer agreements

Transfer agreements offer Indigenous students a clear pathway to bachelor’s degrees from two of Canada's best research universities. At Langara you’ll receive the support and academic preparation necessary to successfully transfer to SFU or UBC.

Financial support

Financial support opportunities for Indigenous students include free tuition for Musqueam Band members and scholarships and bursaries for Indigenous students. The College also works directly with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit community sponsors to help with tuition payment as part of sponsorship billing.

Indigenous students in Nursing

Five seats in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and two seats in the Advanced Entry BSN program are reserved for prospective Indigenous students who meet the minimum admission requirements. Visit the program page to learn more.

Elders in Residence Program

snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ is very fortunate to have an Elder-in-residence (EIR) program. It has been said that 'Elders are our communities' PhDs.' They are holders of sacred Indigenous knowledge and are vital to our Indigenization and reconciliation work at Langara. The Elders in-residence provide support, guidance, and cultural teachings to Indigenous students visiting the Gathering Space, including opportunities for engaging in cultural practice and ceremony. Students, staff, and faculty can request Elder support for events, classroom visits, etc. through the EIR program. Indigenous students and Indigenous programs have priority. Please note that the Elders are community Elders and not employees of the College. Their time is valuable and limited. It is vital that Elders are treated with respect and are supported by the community. Elder wellness is a top priority.
