All Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students must complete the BBA Work Experience Requirement (either COOP 2301, COOP 2302/2303, or BUSM 3000) before they can take BUSM 4200.

Attend a BBA Work Experience Options Information Session to learn more. We recommend looking into your options to satisfy the work experience requirement of your BBA early in your program.

There are three ways BBA students can meet this requirement:

1. Co-op Work Term (COOP 2301 or COOP 2302/2303)

The completion of one Co-op work term would satisfy the Work Experience Requirement. All BBA students have the option to complete up to four Co-op work terms. Co-op is recommended as it allows you to try different career paths, gain valuable work experience, have the support of a Co-op Instructor, and earn money while still in school.

To get started with the Co-op Program, the first step is to take the pre-requisite course, EXPE 2300. Then, you will submit an application to apply for Co-op and meet with a Co-op instructor. As a Co-op student, you will actively apply and interview for jobs and a Co-op instructor will support you along the way. Once you land a Co-op position, your instructor will advise you how to enroll in the Co-op work term course, COOP 2301 (full-time) or COOP 2302/2303 (part-time). After you complete your Co-op term, you must return to an academic semester. Learn more about how Co-op works.

Typically, the entire Co-op process will take around three semesters. For example, if you take EXPE 2300 in the Fall semester, you will spend the Spring semester looking for a Co-op (while taking classes) and then enroll in the Co-op work term course for the Summer semester. It is possible to shorten this process to two semesters.

International students who participate in Co-op have an opportunity to work full-time hours during their Co-op work term. International students who are approved to join the Co-op Program will be issued documentation during the meeting that they can use to apply for their Co-op Work Permit.

Flexible Assessment or Practicum (BUSM 3000)

The BUSM 3000 course is either a Flexible Assessment (past work experience) or a Practicum (future work experience). This course is not a regular lecture, but rather an assessment of your work experience. Students cannot enroll into this course on their own and must submit a request to the Co-op and Career Development Centre.

2. Flexible Assessment (BUSM 3000)

If you have past work experience in your field of study, you can request a Flexible Assessment, an evaluation of past work experience with one employer that a student has completed that is relevant to the student’s BBA program area and the work completed is a minimum of 420 hours. To request a Flexible Assessment, email the Co-op and Career Development Centre at coop@langara.ca to initiate your request.

Please note that Flexible Assessment requests are only accepted during the first six weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters and the first three weeks of the Summer semester.

3. Practicum (BUSM 3000)

If you are currently working in a job in your field of study or you have a job lined up for the upcoming semester in your field of study, you can consider doing a Practicum. The role would also need to be approved by an instructor. To request a Practicum, email the Co-op and Career Development Centre at coop@langara.ca to initiate your request and obtain approval of your work experience before starting your role.

Please note that Practicum requests are only accepted during the first six weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters and the first three weeks of the Summer semester.
