The Langara Research Ethics Board (LREB) ensures that all research involving human participants at Langara College meets nationally accepted ethical standards, as set out in the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2). It is an independent committee responsible for reviewing the ethical acceptability of all such research.

LREB’s work is guided by the TCPS2 principles of respect for persons, concern for welfare, and justice. It operates free from real, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest. The Board may approve, reject, request changes to, or stop research based on ethical considerations.

About Human Research Ethics

Mandate and Responsibilities

LREB reviews research proposals before they begin. It monitors ongoing studies to ensure continued compliance, and reviews concerns or reports of non-compliance. The Board maintains records of approved research and supports course-based research ethics review processes. It also helps ensure institutional policies and practices align with current ethical standards and guidelines related to research involving human participants. The LREB promotes awareness of research ethics across the college community through education and outreach.

For full details on the LREB’s mandate, responsibilities, and procedures, please refer to Policy B5007 Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans

Other policies relevant to research on campus and the LREB include B3004 Integrity in Research and Scholarship and B3005 Conflict of Interest Related to Research.

LREB Membership

LREB is established in accordance with the TCPS2 and institutional policy.

The Board includes at least five members with a range of expertise in research and ethics, as well as a community member with no affiliation to Langara College, and may also include individuals with relevant legal expertise where appropriate. Members are appointed by the President and serve staggered, renewable terms. The Chair is also appointed for a two-year renewable term.

For full details on LREB membership, appointments, and governance, please refer to Policy B5007 Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

Administration

The LREB relies on information provided by investigators to conduct its ethics review. Researchers seeking LREB review must submit sufficient information and supporting documentation to allow for a complete assessment of the study.

Meetings

The LREB meets to review and make decisions on research proposals involving human participants at Langara College. Scheduled meetings generally occur on the last Friday of every second month: January, March, May, July, September, and November. Application deadlines are two weeks prior to each meeting date. Meeting materials are circulated to Board members in advance to allow adequate time for review.

Quorum is required for all decisions in accordance with TCPS2 requirements. The LREB makes decisions by consensus where possible, and by majority vote when consensus cannot be reached. Meeting records are maintained by the LREB administrator and are approved by Board members at subsequent meetings. Further details on meeting procedures and records are outlined in Policy B5007.
