At the time I entered the program in 2017, I was working in Engineering Services for the City of New Westminster and was looking to realign my career toward my long-standing passion for recreation, community services, and public leadership. The online format was instrumental in making this possible, as it allowed me to continue working full-time throughout my studies.
What set Langara apart for me was not only the quality of the education, but the culture and leadership within the Recreation Studies Department. During my time in the program, I experienced several profound personal challenges, including the loss of my grandmother and both of my parents being diagnosed with cancer. Throughout those difficult years, the faculty demonstrated exceptional compassion, flexibility, and support. Their empathy and encouragement helped me persevere and continue progressing academically and professionally. I genuinely do not believe I would have achieved my goals without the support system Langara provided.
The BRM program strengthened my understanding of leadership, recreation management, community development, and public service, while also giving me the confidence to pursue broader opportunities in local government leadership. Since graduating in 2020, I have continued to grow professionally and now serve as the Associate Director, Recreation Services for the City of Vancouver.
Langara also inspired me to continue my academic journey. Following the BRM, I completed my Master's in Public Administration. The program gave me a strong foundation in systems thinking, leadership, and community-centred service delivery that continues to shape my approach as a public sector leader. I hope to continue using both my education and professional experience to support and empower emerging leaders in the recreation sector and contribute meaningfully to the communities we serve.
