EDI Student Reflection and Action Guide

Dear students of snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College,

We are members of Langara’s first Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Student Advisory.  We come from all different backgrounds and lived experiences and together with the EDI Office, we created this guide to support students and to offer a resource that is meaningful throughout your journey at the college.

As students ourselves, we know there is no single way to experience Langara. This guide invites you to reflect on how equity, diversity, and inclusion connect to your own experiences, both inside and outside the classroom. Take your time moving through the guide and consider what resonates with you.

The guiding principles that follow are intended as a starting point for reflection and action. Building a more inclusive community is ongoing work, and there is no perfect place to begin. We encourage you to revisit this guide as your experiences evolve and new perspectives emerge.

Ways to Use this Guide

You could refer to this guide if:

  • A classmate receives an accommodation that you don't fully understand. Check in with the guide to better understand why students may need different kinds of support to succeed.
  • Someone points out that something you said had an unintended impact. This guide can help you understand the need to respond respectfully and learn from the experience.  
  • You experience a challenge in class or witness something that doesn’t feel right. Look to this guide to understand student rights and advocacy and get ideas for support.

Understanding Equity, Fairness, and Accessibility

Equity recognizes that people face different opportunities and challenges. Creating fairness means addressing those differences rather than assuming the same approach works for everyone. 

Reflection Questions

  • When I think about fairness, do I focus on everyone being treated the same, or on everyone getting what they need?
  • What barriers might make learning or participation more difficult for some students?  
  • How can I support a learning environment where everyone has an opportunity to succeed?

Action Items

  • Help create a more equitable learning environment. When connecting with your peers, think about how everyone can participate in ways that work for them.
  • Pause before assuming a support or accommodation is unfair and consider what barrier it may be helping to remove.
  • Explore a perspective different from your own. Listen to how other students experience learning and consider how their experiences may differ from yours. 

Supporting One Another

Supporting equity and inclusion is a shared effort. You are not expected to take on every concern, navigate difficult situations alone, or advocate at the expense of your well-being. It’s okay to seek support, step back, or choose how and when to engage. Whether it’s small, individual actions, or organized collective efforts, we can all play a part in helping change institutional commitments into action.
