Co-op & Career Development Centre Co-op Requirements for International Students
At Langara College, international students in eligible programs are encouraged to participate in Co-op Education. As of April 1, 2026, international students in eligible Co-op programs will no longer need to apply for a separate co-op work permit to participate in the Co-op work term. See the IRCC website for details.
Once you have been accepted into the Co-op Program, the steps include:
- During your initial meeting with your Co-op instructor, you will be provided with a Co-op Program Eligibility Letter stating that you are in a program with a Co-op. This letter can be used if needed.
- Students must ensure their study permit has conditions that allow them to work in Canada, including working on campus and off campus to be eligible to work during their Co-op work term. See Langara Global's Immigration Resources page for information about working on and off campus. If you have questions about your study permit, contact Langara Global.
- You need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada. Employers must request and view an employee’s SIN card and record the number within three days of starting employment. Remember that the SIN card is not an identity card and is not an authorization to work in Canada. Go to Service Canada's website and apply for a SIN. There is no cost to apply for a SIN.
