Langara College is committed to providing an accessible and inclusive academic environment for students with disabilities. 

The primary role of Accessibility Services is to facilitate equitable access to courses, programs, and services for admissible students with disabilities. Our dedicated Accessibility Services team meets with self-identified students with disabilities to determine reasonable academic accommodations and arrange appropriate support services on a case-by-case basis.

Please be aware that arranging academic accommodations is a process that takes time. For example, books in alternate format and Sign Language Interpreters may take several months to arrange. Please book an intake appointment with Accessibility Services and provide the appropriate medical documentation with reasonable notice, preferably at least three (3) months prior to the start of the semester.

If you plan to bring a parent or supporter to your intake appointment, please let reception know when booking.

If you require a Sign Language Interpreter, please notify reception at the time of booking. Accessibility Services will arrange one for you.

Personal information regarding a student's disability is collected, used, disclosed, secured, and disposed of in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

How to Prepare for the Intake Appointment

  1. Please review the documentation information on our webpage:
    • If you have current medical documentation, bring it with you.
    • If your documentation is outdated or does not meet criteria, consult the Accessibility Services Consultant at the intake.
    • If you are unsure what documentation to get, consult the Accessibility Services Consultant before obtaining it. 
    • If you are a Grade 12 student with a Learning Disability/Specific Learning Disorder and your report is outdated, check with your school about your eligibility to obtain an updated psycho-educational assessment.
  2. Please be prepared to discuss any functional limitations you currently experience or have previously experienced in an educational setting.

Our services

  • Facilitate equitable access to Langara College courses, programs, and services for admissible students with disabilities
  • Review medical documentation and work with students in determining and facilitating academic accommodations and support services
  • Provide referrals to college and community resources
  • Assist eligible students with applications for StudentAid BC special programs
  • Provide access to Assistive Technology training and the Learning Technology Lab

Academic Accommodations are put in place to eliminate, reduce, or mitigate barriers faced by students with disabilities in the educational setting. Academic accommodation:

  • facilitates the student’s opportunity for equitable access to, and full academic participation in, a course or program, which includes, but is not limited to, practicums, clinical settings, and other work-integrated learning settings.
  • does not give the student an advantage or guarantee the student’s academic success.
  • does not alter the essential requirements of a course or program.
