Academic Requirements

Domestic Applicants: BC Grade 12 Graduation (or equivalent) or 19 years of age or older
International Applicants: BC Grade 12 Graduation (or equivalent)

English Language Requirement

Category 1

  • Volunteer or paid work experience
  • Two letters of reference
  • Criminal Record Check

Applicant Notes

  • Recent volunteer or work experience in the school system with students with disabilities is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have 100 hours of recent volunteer experience with children with disabilities in school or related settings.
  • A minimum of two recent letters are required certifying that the volunteer experience was successful and that 100 hours were completed. Note: Letters from relatives or friends are not acceptable.
  • All students in the Education Assistant Program must complete a Criminal Records Review prior to the first practicum. Practicum placement facilities require evidence of a satisfactory Criminal Records Review in order for program students to work with children/adolescents in the school system.
  • Admission to a program at Langara College does not guarantee registration in required courses.
  • Students admitted to this program may need to take one or more additional English courses in order to meet the prerequisite requirements of the English courses required in this program.

Applicant Notes

  • Recent volunteer or work experience in the field with children and/or adolescents is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have 50 hours of recent volunteer experience with children with diverse abilities in school or related settings. This has been reduced from 100 hours. If experience is under 50 hours and/or doesn’t include hours in an educational setting, applicants may be asked to demonstrate knowledge, experience, and interest in working with students with exceptional needs by alternate means, such as watching and answering questions from videos.
  • A minimum of two recent letters are required certifying that the volunteer/work experience was successful, preferably with a minimum of 50 hours. Note: Letters from relatives or friends are not acceptable.
  • All students in the Education Assistant Program must complete a Criminal Records Review prior to the first practicum. Practicum placement facilities require evidence of a satisfactory Criminal Records Review in order for program students to work with children/adolescents in the school system.
