Langara College's Computer Science department is celebrating a fourth-place finish by its students in a national cybersecurity competition, a result that showcases their skills and readiness for the tech industry. Discover how the department gives students a clear path into computer science and technology.

In an impressive display of skill and knowledge, students from Langara College recently participated in a national cybersecurity capture the flag (CTF) competition, securing fourth place against top Canadian universities, including the University of Toronto, McMaster University, and Carleton University. This result reflects the kind of learning Langara’s Computer Science department aims to give students, with a strong focus on cybersecurity skills that are in growing demand across the tech sector.

Insights into the competition

Canada’s Cyber Security Challenge, run by CyberSci from February 20 to February 22, 2026, is a gamified event designed to challenge participants in various cybersecurity skills, including web hacking, cryptography, and forensic analysis. Participants raced against the clock to solve sophisticated security challenges and uncover hidden text strings known as "flags."

Hailas Sharnuud, a recent Computer Science graduate and an active member of the CTF team, says, “It was an overwhelming success that far exceeded my expectations. Over 30 academic teams from across Canada took part, along with some of the country's top hackers, which was truly mind blowing for me.”

Faculty support and community engagement

The event was driven by student enthusiasm and faculty mentorship. Kim Lam, a Computer Science instructor, notes the significance of CTF competitions in connecting classroom theories with real-world applications: “CTF competitions inspire students to connect their coursework with practical scenarios.” He adds, “The challenges require teamwork, problem-solving, and the application of knowledge from diverse subjects, reinforcing the idea that education extends beyond traditional classroom boundaries.”

Langara's Computer Science program takes pride in smaller class sizes, making it easier for students to get to know their instructors and ask for help when they need it. Warren Mok, the College’s Cybersecurity manager, emphasizes the importance of this close-knit learning community: “Students thrive in these intimate settings, where they can receive personalized support throughout their academic journey.” This kind of support helps students build the confidence and skills needed to succeed in high-level competitions like this.

Building Canada’s next cybersecurity talent

Cybersecurity is among the fastest-growing sectors globally and is facing a worldwide skills shortage. Langara's Computer Science department helps students build core knowledge while giving them chances to use those skills in practical ways. “With the constant evolution of technology—from AI to critical infrastructure—there are numerous pathways within cybersecurity that students can explore,” Mok explains. With demand for cybersecurity professionals continuing to rise, graduates with hands-on experience are especially well positioned for in-demand roles.

Hailas, who transitioned from studying math to computer science, shares: “These competitions have honed my ability to problem-solve under pressure. I'm now actively seeking a position in cybersecurity.” He further reflected on what sparked his interest, saying, “I love puzzle games. I started with a logic gate simulator that was disguised as a puzzle game. Two weeks later, I built my first 8-bit CPU and its assembly language from basic logic gates alone. That experience got me hooked on the engineering of computing machines.”

For students interested in cybersecurity, Langara can be both a starting point for a career in tech, as well as a clear pathway for university transfer. The recent CTF competition exemplifies how the College fosters skill development beyond theoretical learning. By supporting students who want to compete, experiment, and keep learning, Langara is helping grow the next generation of cybersecurity talent in Canada. As Mok aptly puts it, “Students need to be willing to learn,” ensuring that Langara graduates are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the digital age.
