The Langara Global Volunteer Program (LGVP) supports special events and ongoing activities for students at Langara. Volunteers receive training and orientation to gain valuable skills while supporting the Langara Global office. Langara Global volunteers plan and organize a variety of cultural events, social gatherings, and recreational activities.
As a Langara Global Volunteer, you can gain valuable experience and make an impact through opportunities such as:
Join committees to plan on and off-campus events
Support orientation sessions and welcome new students
Support on-campus cultural celebrations and special events
Create digital content and manage the Langara Global Volunteer Program social media account
Why Volunteer?
Volunteering is a rewarding way to make a meaningful impact while gaining valuable personal and professional experience. As a Langara Global Volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to support fellow students, build lasting connections, explore new experiences, and develop transferrable skills that will benefit you both academically and professionally.
To recognize your contributions, you'll receive a reference letter and a Statement of Achievement upon successfully completing your participation in the Langara Global Volunteer Program. Outstanding volunteers may also be recognized with additional incentives each semester. Plus, the volunteer hours you earn through LGVP can strengthen your applications for financial awards, making your experience even more rewarding.

In the Langara community, we aim to provide a great support system for new international students. Moving to a new country and starting college is a huge milestone and adventure, but it may feel a bit overwhelming at first. That is where our i-Guide Peer Mentorship program comes in!
Through this program, we match new international students with experienced Langara students who can offer tips on student life, guidance in transitioning to Vancouver and Langara, navigating a new culture, and provide genuine support and friendship. Ultimately, we hope to help new students adapt more easily and feel engaged with the college community.
How the Program Works
New international students can apply to become mentees, and current students who studied at least one semester can apply to volunteer as mentors. Mentors and mentees are committed for the semester and are willing to connect at least twice a month.
Interactions and activities between mentors and mentees may include:
Connect to learn about tips on transitioning and adjusting to Vancouver and Langara.
Mentors share tips and directions to new students on the essentials (e.g. library, transit, shopping, banking, and mobile phone services), and provide guidance on settling into Langara such as sharing study and Canadian classroom tips, where to buy textbooks, where to access college services, etc.
Participate in Langara events such as the i-Guide Meet & Greet event, LGVP event, social/cultural event, or an immigration workshop so mentors and mentees get to meet each other in person.
For new students who wish to become a mentee: Roles & Expectations:
You are patient, respectful, kind and committed to having a mentor who offers you tips and guidance to settle into Vancouver and Langara, and guide you towards independence and comfort with student life.
Mentees and mentors are committed to connecting at least twice a month (in-person or via phone, whatsapp, email, or social media). As a mentee, please do not hesitate to initiate contact with your mentor and ask questions.
Mentors and mentees are expected to participate in at least one Langara event together such as the i-Guide Meet & Greet event, LGVP event, social/cultural event, or an immigration workshop.
Your mentor may recommend that you access specific Langara services for additional support, such as immigration advice, course planning, or counselling.
While mentors are here to support you, please do not see them as an assistant, tutor, or driver.
You do not need to follow every suggestion your mentor makes. If you are not interested or available, simply thank them for the offer and politely decline or suggest another idea.
If you have issues connecting with your mentor, such as after trying for three weeks, please contact the i-Guide program and we will investigate and look for a solution.
Application Requirement & Process:
You must be a brand-new international student joining Langara in the semester you are applying to be a mentee.
Complete the mentee application form successfully.
Matching Process:
While we try our best to pair every applicant, matching depends on program capacity and a balanced mentor-to-mentee ratio to ensure a great experience for all. Because of this, a match may not always be possible. We will notify you of the application outcome by email, approximately 1-2 weeks before the semester starts.
For current students who wish to become a mentor: Roles & Expectations:
You are patient, respectful, kind and committed to helping mentees navigate different resources and providing tips and guidance to support their adjustment to student life, Langara and Vancouver.
Mentors and mentees are committed to connecting at least twice a month (in-person or via phone, WhatsApp, email, or social media). As a mentor, please do not hesitate to initiate contact with your mentee to see how you may offer support and guidance.
While you try to offer guidance to your mentees, you may recommend specific Langara services to them for additional support, such as counselling, course planning, immigration advice, etc.
Mentors and mentees are expected to participate in at least one Langara event together, such as the i-Guide Meet & Greet event, LGVP event, social/cultural event, or an immigration workshop.
Mentors may reach out to the i-Guide program if you need temporary coverage while you are away, further guidance and tips on becoming a supportive mentor, difficulty connecting with your mentee despite trying for three weeks, etc.
Application Requirements & Process:
You must have successfully completed at least one semester at Langara and be currently registered as a Langara student in a Regular Studies, Career, or Continuing Studies program.
Complete the mentor application form successfully.
Complete the mentor training session – designed to help you understand a mentor’s role and responsibilities, as well as sharing tips and guidance on how to be a supportive mentor. Training also builds leadership skills and earns volunteer hours (if you have a MyImpact account). Note that completion of the mentor training will enter the matching pool but does not guarantee a match.
Matching Process:
Mentor applicants will enter the matching pool after completing the mentor training successfully. Please note that it does not guarantee a match with a mentee. Placement depends on program capacity and a balanced mentor-to-mentee ratio to ensure a great experience for all. We will email you the application outcome 1–2 weeks before the semester starts.
Program Completion & Recognition:
Mentors complete the program when they fulfill the following requirements:
Check in regularly with your mentees at least twice a month throughout the semester (in-person or via phone, WhatsApp, email, or social media), sharing tips and guidance to support their settling into Vancouver and Langara.
Attend at least one Langara event together with your mentees, such as the i-Guide Meet & Greet, LGVP event, social/cultural event, or an immigration workshop.
Submit a brief end-of-semester report about your connection with your mentees. We will email you the reporting form near the end of the term.
To earn your volunteer hours, mentors need to complete the program and have created a MyImpact account.
Upon completion of the program, mentors may also request a recognition letter for volunteering one semester or a participation certificate for volunteering in two semesters or more. Qualified mentors may also apply for the i-Guide Mentors Award, which is a financial award recognizing mentors with exceptional contributions to supporting new students and the i-Guide program.

As a result, we may not be able to match every applicant. We will notify you of the application outcome by email, approximately 1-2 weeks before the semester starts.
