This course builds on the knowledge and experience gained in FINA 1161: Introduction to Sculpture. Students explore three major areas required during the production of public art: concept development, detailed design and fabrication/ installation. Topics covered during the course include site visits, artmaking in public space, publicness, submission deliverables, architectural and engineering drawings, public policy, budgeting, maquette making and appropriateness of materials.
Personal artistic expression is encouraged while students develop technical ability and conceptual comprehension through supervised studio practice. Students create site-specific projects for the Langara College campus and/or produce collaborative public art work to be installed at the Langara Canada Line Transit Station. Throughout the course, students have a number of opportunities to develop presentation skills and be introduced to professionals in the field.
