Why Study English at Langara?
Our courses offer you reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to help you:
- Enter a profession or trade career with practical communication skills
- Transfer to a university with experience and training in academic writing
- Navigate future career opportunities
- Think critically about the world around you
- Be an aware and engaged citizen in this age of fake news and A.I.-generated content
Courses
We offer courses in the following areas:
- Literature: Many of our courses have a strong literature component because an appreciation for literature will open your mind and enable you to gain insights into the human condition. Whether you are confronted with the ever-changing world of technical innovation or the daily pressures of life, literature can provide models for reflection and action.
- Academic Writing: Most of our courses place a focus on reading and writing within an academic setting. You will learn about effective reading strategies and research skills, and how to develop arguments and write convincing essays.
- Creative Writing: Some of our faculty are published and acclaimed authors and editors. They will share their talents with you in writing workshop and help you work towards publication.
- Communications: Our communications courses will teach you to express yourself professionally in the workplace. Whether you are fulfilling a degree requirement or want to improve your communications skills, our courses will help you build confidence in professional writing and presentations.
- EAL & Academic Preparation: Our Academic Preparation courses will help you develop your reading and writing skills so you meet the prerequisites for Langara’s university transfer courses. These courses have especially small class sizes (20 students max) that allow the instructors to work very closely with you to improve your English skills.
