Vancouver, BC Vancouver, BC – Langara College would like to congratulate School of Nursing Assistant Chair, Simulation, Shannon Redmond on receiving the 2015 Award for Excellence in Nursing Education (Non-Tenured) from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN).

The CASN’s Annual Awards reception was held at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel on Monday, November 16th, 2015, where Redmond was presented with the award for her outstanding leadership, commitment, and innovation in the delivery of simulation-based education.

"This amazing award definitely exemplifies our commitment at Langara and as a Nursing school to deliver excellence and innovation to all our students," said Redmond. "Our Nurse Educators and lab staff have worked collaboratively to create innovative hands on learning experiences so our nursing students are better prepared for their profession. These simulation experiences are now offered in many courses in each term throughout the three nursing programs: BSN, nursing transition program (LPN to RN), and our international nursing diploma program."

“Under Shannon's leadership the critical experiential learning required by our nursing students improved dramatically, says Margaret Heldman, Dean of the Faculty of Science. “Increasing experiential learning opportunities is an key goal of the teaching and learning priority of the College’s Academic Plan. Because of Shannon's efforts, the School of Nursing Simulation Centre provides excellent opportunities for nursing students to meet competencies.”

As Assistant Department Chair, Redmond spearheaded the adoption of the International Best Practice Standards for Nursing Simulation by Langara’s Nursing Faculty in 2014. This has contributed to a higher degree of professionalism and quality simulation education for nursing students. Faculty are now committed to this innovative teaching method which exposes students to unique simulated experiences such as inter-professional teamwork, patient safety, intimate partner violence, and palliative care.

“Shannon worked tirelessly to develop our Nursing Simulation Centre to international standards. We are the first school in Canada to adopt these international standards,” said Janine Lennox, Department Chair, Langara School of Nursing. “She was able bring us forward in a short period of time through her commitment in finding the evidence for the practices we have adopted. We will miss her commitment and drive now that she has retired from Langara.”

By advocating that the lab be a professional clinical practice space where students treat mannequins exactly as one would a real patient, educators can now provide more opportunities for students to realistically simulate nursing practice. Internationally, Redmond contributed to the revision of the 2015 International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Best practice simulation standards.

"The award event in Ottawa was unforgettable and so much fun. Janine Lennox was present at the event and needs to be recognized for her incredible support. I so wished all the wonderful nurse educators and staff at Langara who assisted with the Nursing Simulation Centre (NSC) transformation could have been there with me. They deserve the award as well," added Redmond.
