Department of Interdisciplinary StudiesAbout

All universities and colleges speak about the importance of interdisciplinary approaches.

At Langara, we do a lot more than just talk.

Faculty from programs across Langara come together to teach and team-teach our classes; we are united in our passion for teaching and student success.  Students are exposed to diverse approaches, viewpoints, and pedagogies in every classroom and program and learn how to problem-solve with a variety of nuanced perspectives.

Innovative Learning Experiences

We believe in experiential learning and implement it in courses throughout the programs.  Students can engage in intellectual problem-solving, often with real world application, in a supportive environment.

In our classes, students might:

  • Partner with the City of Vancouver to address and solve municipal problems.
  • Collaborate online with students in Costa Rica.
  • Recreate dishes from an ancient Roman cookbook.
  • Investigate and connect with community-based health services in the Lower Mainland.

Programs

Our 7 unique programs guide students in developing skills vital for any career path:

  • Critical thinking and analysis.
  • Social, cultural, and global awareness.
  • Intellectual nimbleness and flexibility.

Programs emphasize: Social change. Intersectionality. Indigenous perspectives. Sustainability. Non-violent movements. Decolonization. Gender roles and identities.
