Objective of the Agreement
This agreement outlines the principles, guidelines, and procedures governing admission and assessment of qualified applicants for entry to the third year of Capilano University’s Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication (BDVC) following successful completion of Langara College’s Diploma in Design Formation.
CREDENTIAL ASSESSED
Langara College Diploma in Design Formation (60 credits) transfers to Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication at Capilano University.
CREDITS AWARDED
Design Formation graduates will be awarded the following Capilano University credits:
- Bachelor of Design IDES/DSGN 100- and 200-level required courses – 50 credits
- ENGL 100 – 3 credits
Total block transfer credits awarded – 53 credits
CREDITS REQUIRED
- Design Formation graduates are required to obtain the following Langara College credits:
- DSGN 100- and 200-level required courses – 42 credits
- DSGN 2251 (Elective) – 3 credits
- DSGN 2351 (Elective) – 3 credits
- DSGN 2451 or DSGN 2152 – 3 credits
- DSGN 2256 (Elective) – 6 credits
- ENGL 1123 or any course equivalent to CapU’s ENGL 100 – 3 credits
- DSGN 1121 – 1 credit
- DSGN 1122 – 1 credit
- DSGN 1123 – 1 credit
Total Block Transfer Credits Required – 63 credits
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BDES GRADUATION
Total credits
Capilano University requires that at least 50% of a credential’s credits must be obtained at the University. This translates to 62 Capilano University credits required to obtain a Bachelor of Design. Successful applicants must take this into account if applying for additional transfer credits.
Elective credits
In addition to IDES/DSGN credits, BDes students must complete a total of 24 “breadth elective” credits in subjects external to design. Some of these courses are mandatory, others are at the discretion of the student. Mandatory for the BDes are:
- ENGL 100
- Second ENGL or CMNS course
- 3 credits with Quantitative/Analytical designation
- Minimum 6 credits at 300/400 level
Cap Core credits
Capilano University requires “Cap Core” credits for all degree programs. These can be satisfied with a combination of specific IDES/DSGN courses and electives. Students transferring with between 45–59 block transfer credits must complete 18 credits of Cap Core courses:
- FOUNDATION: 3 credits literacy (example: ENGL 100) plus 3 credits numeracy
- INTEGRATION: 6 credits (3 credits satisfied by DSGN 325)
- PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE: 6 credits (satisfied by mandatory 400-level BDes courses)
